چکیده

Schelling [Schelling, T.C., 1969. Models of Segregation. American Economic Review, Papers and Proceedings, 59, 488-493, Schelling, T.C., 1971a. Dynamic Models of Segregation. Journal of Mathematical Sociology, 1 (2), 143–186, Schelling, T.C., 1971b. On the Ecology of Micromotives. The Public Interest, 25, 61–98, Schelling, T.C., 1978. Micromotives and Macrobehavior. New York: Norton.] presented a microeconomic model showing how an integrated city could unravel to a rather segregated city, notwithstanding relatively mild assumptions concerning the individual agents' preferences, i.e., no agent preferring the resulting segregation. We examine the robustness of Schelling's model, focusing in particular on its driving force: the individual preferences. We show that even if all individual agents have a strict preference for perfect integration, best-response dynamics may lead to segregation. This raises some doubts on the ability of public policies to generate integration through the promotion of openness and tolerance with respect to diversity. We also argue that the one-dimensional and two-dimensional versions of Schelling's spatial proximity model are in fact two qualitatively very different models of segregation. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Beyond the schelling's segregation: is it equivalent to be repulsed by dissimilar rather to be attracted by similar?

From the Schelling model of segregation, we derive models of group formation that shed light on segregation or mixing patterns observed in spatial grid networks. Individuals have types and see type-dependent benefits or drawback from theirs neighbours: this leads each one to be attracted or repulsed by its own like or unlike. This framework allows to studying many spatial phenomena that involve...

Investigating the Effect of Spatial Proximity on Iran University- Industry Co-publications by using Gravity Model

Background and Aim: Due to the importance of scientific relations between university and industry, it is so important to identify the factors that affect these relations. So,the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of spatial proximity on university- industry collaboration. The collaboration indicator which is used here is University- Industry Co-publications. Methods: The research is...

Emergence of segregation in evolving social networks.

In many social networks, there is a high correlation between the similarity of actors and the existence of relationships between them. This paper introduces a model of network evolution where actors are assumed to have a small aversion from being connected to others who are dissimilar to themselves, and yet no actor strictly prefers a segregated network. This model is motivated by Schelling's [...

A physical analogue of the Schelling model.

We present a mathematical link between Schelling's socio-economic model of segregation and the physics of clustering. We replace the economic concept of "utility" by the physics concept of a particle's internal energy. As a result cluster dynamics is driven by the "surface tension" force. The resultant segregated areas can be very large and can behave like spherical "liquid" droplets or as a co...
